When you read the specs about pumps you will understand most of it. One thing that often confuses people is 'head'. Head is usually expressed in feet and means that is how high the water will pump at its highest. For example on this Aquamax pump, the head is 10.5' So when the water reaches that height, it will simply sit there at the top of the pipe or hose and go no higher. Lower the hose and water comes out. Raise the pump and water comes out. Head height will be affected by the size of the hose as well. This pump will have a 10.5' head using a 1.5" hose. A larger diameter hose will make the head lower.
